Senna Powder, commonly known in Ayurveda as Swarnapatri (“Golden Leaf”) or Sanay, is derived from the sun-dried leaves of the Cassia angustifolia plant. It is a potent natural laxative approved by modern medical authorities for the short-term treatment of constipation. The active compounds, known as sennosides, work by stimulating the intestinal muscles to promote rhythmic contractions (peristalsis) and encouraging fluid transport into the colon, which facilitates the easy passage of stool. In Ayurveda, it is used to balance Pitta and Vata doshas and is a primary ingredient in detoxification therapies like Virechana to purge the body of “Ama” (toxins).
